Dental hygiene

Professional cleaning for a healthier mouth

Your teeth need regular deep cleaning that goes beyond normal brushing and flossing

What is a dental hygiene treatment?

Dental hygiene treatments are essentially a spring-clean for your mouth. Our oral health therapist will closely examine your teeth and gums to assess their condition, and then perform a thorough professional clean and polish to remove any plaque and tartar build-up. We use EMS Airflow technology to get your teeth cleaner with no painful scraping. What do I need to know about dental hygiene treatment?

Regular visits to have your teeth professionally cleaned alongside your usual dental checks are an important part of maintaining good oral health. Our oral health therapist uses EMS Airflow technology to clean painlessly between your teeth and gums all the way down to the root, where normal brushing can’t reach. Dental hygiene treatments prevent tartar build-up that can cause tooth decay. It also helps you to avoid gingivitis and periodontitis, which are bacterial gum diseases that are hard to detect until they are advanced and could potentially cause lasting damage to your gums and teeth.

What other treatments are available?

Depending on your situation, some of the following treatment options might be recommended to transform your smile.

Common questions about dental hygiene

  • No, a dental hygiene treatment should not be at all painful, as we use advanced equipment designed to clean your teeth painlessly. However, if you have very inflamed gums, there may be a small amount of discomfort.

  • We recommend visiting our oral therapist every six to twelve months, depending on the condition of your teeth and gums, and the level of care you give your teeth at home.

  • Tartar, otherwise known as calculus, forms when plaque calcifies to form hard deposits on your teeth – often in places that are hard to reach with your toothbrush or floss. You can help prevent tartar with twice-daily brushing and daily flossing, but once it has formed, it needs to be removed by an oral therapist. Left untreated, tartar can cause tooth decay and gum disease.

  • Gum disease occurs when the bacteria in plaque and tartar causes the gums to become inflamed. You might notice that they bleed when you brush your teeth, but often diseased gums cause no obvious symptoms. Left untreated, gum disease can create an infection that leads to loose teeth and even tooth loss.

  • EMS Airflow enables an oral therapist to quickly identify areas of biofilm, plaque, and tartar on your teeth. It then uses air and powder to remove these build-ups quickly, thoroughly, and painlessly, with no hard tools or scraping. Find out more about EMS Airflow.
